Thomas CASH, Amherst, Botetourt, Rockbridge, Virginia, 1766-1856
Facts and Timeline for Thomas CASH
1766
Thomas CASH is born around 1766. He is the son of Stephen CASH and Johanna "Hanna" TUCKER.
1810 Census, Rockbridge, Virginia
In 1810, we find Thomas CASH in Amherst, Virginia. The oldes male in the household is 45 or over, which I assume is Thomas. This means he was born before 1766.
The oldest female was between the ages of 26 and 44, which would give her birth year between 1765 and 1784. I believe that in 1810, Thomas CASH was married to his second wife, Jane CAMRON.
There were six other males in the house in 1810. Three were between the ages of 0 and 9, being born between 1801 and 1810. Two were listed as being of the ages between 10 and 15, being born between 1795 and 1800. One we listed as being between 16 and 25, with a birth year between 1785 and 1794.
I know of at least eight sons for Thomas:
- Jesse CASH, born around 1785, age 25 in 1810
- Benjamin CASH, born around 1793, age 17 in 1810
- Reuben CASH, born around 1794, age 16 in 1810
- Peachy CASH, born around 1798, age 12 in 1810
- Ready CASH, born around 1799, age 11 in 1810
- William CASH, born around 1800, age 10 in 1810
- John CASH, born around 1802, age 8 in 1810
- Leroy CASH, born around 1808, age 2 in 1810
The three sons born between 1801 and 1810 could be William, John and Leroy.
The two sons born between 1795 and 1800 could Peachy and Ready. This would leave Reuben and/or Benjamin to be the one son born between 1785 and 1794. I am ssuming that Jesse was not living with Thomas as he was married in 1806.
There were two females listed in the household, one age 0 through 9, born between 1801 and 1810. The other was age 16 through 25, born between 1785 and 1794.
I know of at least three daughters of Thomas CASH:
- Mary CASH, born around 1796, age 24 in 1810
- Tabitha CASH, born around 1790, age 20 in 1810
- Nancy CASH, born around 1798, age 12 in 1810
It is not improbable that either Tabitha or Mary had been married at that time and had moved out of the house. And the birth years I have for any of these children may be wrong.
1820 Census, Rockbridge, Virginia
In the 1820 census, there is one male listed as being 45 or older, meaning that this man, most probably Thomas was born in or before 1775. The oldest female, most probably Jane also listed as being 45 or older, meaning she was born during or before 1775.
There were two males in the house between the ages of 10 and 15, meaning they were 1805 and 1810. One of these is probably Leroy. I do not have a 1820 census that shows Ready as head of the household, so one of these may be him, however, I do believe that is so. There is only the one female shown in the household.
Three members of the family are marked as working in Agriculture.
1830 Census, Rockbridge, Virginia
In the 1830 census, Thomas, the oldest male, is shown as being between 50 and 59, meaning he was born between 1771 and 1780. We know from the 1820 census, he was older than 45, so he must be 55 or older in 1830, meaning he was born between 1771 and 1775.
The oldest female is shown as being between the ages of 40 and 49. If this is Jane (though I have seen her death listed as early as 1820), then she would have been born between 1781 and 1790. This is not consistent from the woman we saw in the 1810 or 1820 census. It may be a mistake, or it may be a different woman.
There are two other males living in the house, one between the ages of 10 and 14, one between the ages of 30 and 39. I have no idea who either of these gentlemen are.
There are two other females in the house, one between the ages of 5 and 9, the other between the ages of 15 and 19. Again, I'm not sure who these women are. I'm guessing Jane and Thomas had more children after Leroy.
Apr 1856
The Family Data Collection shows that Thomas died in Apr 1856 around the age of 90 in Rockbridge, Virginia. I have never found him in a census later than 1830.

Notes for THOMAS CASH:
Source from ancestry.com, by William Compton Kerr, last updated 24 Mar 2005
It is felt that Thomas Cash was married once to a person named Jemima,
but the only record found of her is when Tabitha married, she was listed as her mother.
There is no record I know of which links Thomas with Jemima.
But Don L, Cash of San Diego said there was a family record and he researched the family for 40 years or so.
He told me in 1984 that there was a family record of them together.
However, due to his ill health at the time, I could not press him about it.
He listed Tabitha as a daughter of Jemima and Thomas on family sheets he sent me.
We know that Thomas Cash definitely married Jane Camron, daughter of Duncan Cameron, of Amherst. Co. Va.,
prior to 15 Sept. 1806, in Amherst Co. See Deed Bk K:468, and he had some children with her.
However, we don't have definite birthdates for many of his children, so this family needs much more research.
Don Cash mentioned that there was a divorce between Thomas and Jemima? Has anyone found this?
Proven Children of Thomas Cash:
Mary (Polly) Cash m. Moses Wright, Jr., son of Elizabeth Whitehead and Moses Wright,
on 20 Jan 1807, Amherst Co. VA. Mary was the daughter of Thomas Cash as given on the marriage record.
James Cash m Seley Campbell, daughter of Edward Campbell, on 17 February 1811, Rockbridge Co. Va.
Marriage record gives her father's name and James' father as Thomas Cash.
Nancy Cash m. Morris Wright, son of Elizabeth Whitehead and Moses Wright.
In 1850 Rockbridge Co. census Thomas Cash was living with them.
She was age 55, Morris was 63, Thomas was 86, and the son of Morris and Nancy, George W. Wright, was age 33.
William Cash m Jenny Hite, daughter of Samuel, on 10 February 1818, Rockbridge Co. Va.
William was given as the son of Thomas Cash on marriage record.
John Cash m Sarah Fauber on 15 Mar 1824, Augusta Co. Va.
John was given as the son of Thomas Cash on the marriage record.
Ready Cash m Mary Hartigan, daughter of Timothy, on 27 August 1823, Augusta Co. Va.
Ready was given as the son of Thomas Cash on the marriage record.
The other children given on this family group sheet are not proven children of Thomas Cash and are
given only for research purposes. Nor is the name of the mother of these children definitely known,
except for Reuben Cash who was the son of Jemima Cash, her identity remains in question.
She was Reuben's guardian along with William and James Cash when Reuben married Bethena Wright in 1816 in Amherst Co. Va.
On the marriage bond secured by his mother, Jemima Cash, and by William Cash and James Cash, sons of Stephen Cash (d. 1799),
Reuben was said to have no legitimate father,
so the only thing we know for sure is that Jemima Cash on that record was his mother.
Nothing has been found yet to link Thomas Cash to this Jemima Cash.
Who was she?
The only reason I am listing Reuben in the Thomas Cash family is because most descendants seem to believe
he was son of Thomas, but we don't have a record to prove that.
When Tabitha Cash married Lewis Martin, her mother, Jemima Cash signed marriage record; no father was mentioned.
Leroy P. Cash, born about 1808, appears on 1850 Rockbridge Co. Va. census as age 42.
He was a witness to the marriage of Ellis Wright to Jane Cash, daughter of Seley and James Cash, on 19 December 1836,
Rockbridge Co. Va.
Jesse Cash was listed as the son of Jemima in the 1830 Amherst Co. Va. census, but I am not sure which Jesse that was.
A Jesse Cash died in Amherst Co. in 1857, age 81, from the death certificate.
An estate of Jesse Cash was administered by Cary J. Cash (son of Bethena and Reuben) about 15 September 1856,
Amherst Co. Va.
