Gilbert McClung Gillespie, Sr., 89, of Bedford, Virginia, formerly of Lexington, died Friday, November 21, 2003. He was born March 20, 1914 in Lexington, Virginia, the son of the late Wyatt Paul Gillespie and Laura Donald Gillespie. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family. He was preceded in death by his wife, Ann Irene "Judy" Feazell Gillespie in 1983; a daughter, Martha Gillespie Gibson in 1984; and a granddaughter, Angela Gibson in 1994. He was a member of the Christian faith and a Baptist most of his life. Mr. Gillespie was a retired executive with Lees Carpet, a division of Burlington Industries, Inc. and served for 42 years in various capacities at carpet plants in Glasgow, Virginia, Robbinsville, North Carolina, and Rabun Gap, Georgia. He is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, one daughter, eight grandchildren, and 12 great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted Sunday, November 23, 2003 at the Oakey Funeral Home, East Chapel, 5188 Cloverdale Road, Roanoke, Virginia 24019 at 3 p.m., followed by a brief visitation. His son, Paul F. Gillespie, a part-time local pastor in the United Methodist Church will officiate. A graveside service will be conducted Monday, November 24, 2003 at 10 a.m. at the Stonewall Jackson Cemetery in Lexington, Virginia. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations be made to the Gilbert M. Gillespie Memorial Fund, Manley Memorial Baptist Church, 202 South Main Street, Lexington, Virginia 24450.
