Tarlton GILLESPIE, Amherst, Virginia, 1787-1867

I am not sure where Tarlton was born, but he is known to have lived in Amherst, Virginia from at least 1820 to his death in 1867

I believe he is is the son of Sherod GILLESPIE, but I have nothing other than lots of conjecture.

Tarlton's Family

Tarlton married Mahala REYNOLDS in 1816. She lived longer than he did; I am assuming that she was his only wife. He had seven children that were mentioned in his will:

6 sons: Milton, Jeremiah, William, James, Varlan and John and 2 daughters: Edith Ann and Varilla
He also had another son Lewellan, and he may have had another daughter or two.

Facts and Timeline for Tarlton GILLESPIE

12 Jun 1810 (this date may be in 1819, I'm having a hard time understanding the deed)
It appears from this deed that James ROWSEY sold Tarlton GILLESPIE 11 acres of land in 1810 in Amherst, Virginia. I have an image from the University of Virginia Library Website and I've tried to transcribe this document. It's hard to read, so the transcription is probably not 100% accurate. Tarlton would have been 23 when this property was purchased.
1814,1815
Tarlton served a brief stint in the Virginia Militia in the War of 1812 in Gray's 7th Regiment
27 May 1816
Tarlton GILLESPIE, age 29, believed to be son of Sherod GILLESPIE and Sally HORSLEY, married Mahala REYNOLDS, about age 20, daughter of John REYNOLDS and possibly Abigail HARDWICK in Bedford County. William FUQUA was Surety and they were barried by Enoch W. TERRY. William FUQUA was the brother-in-law of Mahala Reynolds; he was the husband of Rhoda REYNOLDS, Mahala's sister.
1820 census
In 1820 census of Amherst Count, VA
1 male between 26 and 44, which would be Tarlton (Tatton), who would have been 33
1 female between 16 through 25, born between 1795 and and 1804, which would be Mahala, who would have been have been 24
2 females between the ages of 0 and 9, who would have been born between 1811 and 1820. This gives us an extra female. Edith Ann was born in 1820, but there is no record that I have currently that points to another daughter around this age.
1 person listed as working agriculture; 1 female slave listed between the ages of 0 and 13
Note: Sherod, Roland and Willis are on this page as well.
1820
Edith Ann GILLESPIE was born, daughter of Tarlton and Mahala. Date is approximate. We know that she was the daughter of Tarlton, via his will, and census listings that have her as the daughter of Mahala
10 Sep 1821
John REYNOLDS marries Lucy GILLESPIE in Amherst County, Virginia. Witnesses for the wife are Talton (sic) GILLESPIE and Narcissa GILLESPIE. This shows a relationship between Tarlton and Narcissa and whoever this Lucy is.

1827

1830 census
In the 1830 census, the oldest male, Tarlton is listed as between ages 40 and 49, born between 1781 and 1790. The oldest female, which I assume is Mahala, is listed as between the ages of 30 and 39, born between 1791 and 1800.
1 female between 10 and 14 (birth years between 1816 and 1820), this is probably Edith Ann.
2 males between 5 and 9 (birth years, 1821 and 1825)This should be Milton and Jeremiah.
2 males between 0 and 4 (birth years, 1826 and 1830) The youngest here could be Lewellan, but there is an extra male child here; if this is accurate, he may have died before 1840.
2 slaves, 1 male under 10, 1 female between 10 and 23

Witness for husband is Tarlton GILLESPIE as Jeremiah is under age. (Legal age for a male to be married in Virginia at that time was 21.) Also listed as witnesses were James GILLESPIE (no idea which one, J POWELL, Jr., Rich WAUGH (not sure if this was Roderick WAUGH or some relation.) (Record 408; record 490)
1850 census
Tarlton is listed in the 1850 census as being 57 years old. This is the one census where he shows up with an age that has him born in something other than 1787. I believe he is actually 63 at this point. Tarlton is listed as a farmer, with a worth of 250. Mahala is listed as not being able to read. He is listed as living with Mahala GILLESPIE, age 55, female, Lewallen GILLESPIE, age 20, male, laborer, Vallen GILLESPIE, age 16, male, laborer, William GILLESPIE, age 14, male, John GILLESPIE, age 9, male All are listed as being born in Virginia.
A Rouach WAUGH, age 66, a miller, is listed as living next to Tarlton. Living with WAUGH, who is actually Roderick are Editha WAUGH, age 30, female, who we know is Tarlton and Mahala's daughter, and Milton GILLESPIE, age 24, male, laborer who we know is Tarlton and Mahala's son. The worth of the property is listed on the line for Milton at 200. Given that this property, if the one in the early deed, is on the river, there may be a mill on it.

Neighbors

James P (52) and Elizabeth (36) TAYLOR. We know that Roland GILLESPIE and Moses RUCKER (Narcissa GILLESPIE's husband were witnesses for James TAYLOR and Elizabeth GILLESPIE in 1829; however, if this is that James and Elizabeth, she would have been 15 when she was married. The ages of the children fit however. They are not listed with any property value. James is listed as a Shoemaker. Children listed with this couple are: Richard H (19), farmer, Mary A (16), James W (13), Oney I (12), William H (10), Thomas D (8), Andrew (5), Marcellus (2) and Mary Ann (18).
James (60) and Elizabeth (60) Bias. James is listed as a farmer with a worth of 450. Others living in the house are: Sarah (40), Maltida (20) and Nancy J (11). Everyone except for Nancy J is listed as not being able to read.
William (30) Bias, farmer. Others listed in the household are: Alfred (25), laborer.

John (50) and Catharine (46) PUTT; he is listed as a laborer on canal, with a worth of 1000. Also in the house are C F (15) and Sophienia(?) (7). All are listed as being born in Germany. I believe this is the John and Catherine who are the parents of William PUTT, who married Tartlon and Mahala's daughter Varilla. I have their marriage as 17 Apr 1856, however, neither are listed as living with their parents, which makes me doubt the validity of that date.
Charles R EUBANKS (23), listed as Sawmill Keeper, born in Virginia.
Allen (39) and Susan (30) MARKET, listed as a Boatman with no value for personal property. Also in the house are Elizabeth MARKET (3), Richard TURPIN (7) and Cahterine HOWARD (18). All are listed as black, except for Catherine. All are listed as being born in Virginia.

17 Apr 1856
Varilla GILLESPIE, about age 23, daughter of Tarlton and Mahala, marries William PUTT, about age 23, son of John PUTT and Catherine, possibly in Amherst County.
1860 census
Tarlton is listed as being age 73 and living with a M GILLESPIE, age 66, who I assume is Mahala. Also listed on the page living with them is a E Wane W(?), age 38. This E, is listed as a Domestic, with a value of real estate of 750 and personal property of 100. My guess is this is actually Edith WAUGH, Tarlton and Mahala's daughter. This census page is page 179, recorded on 4 Nov 1860, in Amhurst(sic) County, Virginia. It list no post office. Both M and E are listed as not being able to read. This whole page uses mostly initials.

9 Apr 1867
This is the abstract I have for Tarlton's Will. I'm assuming that the first date is the date it was recorded. His wife is listed as Perhala, but everywhere else she is listed as Mahala. My ancestors were not very good at spelling their own names. It is on my list to try and get the microfilm of the actual Will and get all of the details.
